The Red Shoes are in the Sink

By Shelley French, Golf Fore Red Committee Co-Chair
On Friday September 12, 2005 I received a call from my Mom telling me, “The red
shoes are in the sink.” I said, “Gosh Mom, whose red shoes are in the sink?”
She repeated the same phrase and I immediately told her to stay put and I would
be there in 10 minutes. I took her to the hospital emergency room and within
three hours she had lost her ability to speak. Her left carotid artery was 100%
occluded and her right 75%. A blood clot had released from her left carotid
artery and completely shut off the blood supply within her brain. She passed
away 11 days later, at 85 years young. On that day I learned that heart disease
is not just about heart attacks.
Mary Robinson, my friend of 35 years and past president of Northwest Ladies
Golf Association, and I have talked for years about bringing EWGA and NLGA
together to support a charitable cause. The American Heart Association and the
Go Red For Women Program was our choice because we both lost our Moms to heart
disease. The Golf Fore Red Tournament was born from our desire to raise
awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of women in the United
States.
You can help spread the word about heart disease and raise money at the same
time by playing in the inaugural Golf Fore Red Tournament. Volunteers, sponsors
and donors are invited too! Net proceeds benefit the American Heart
Association.
Please accept my personal invitation for a fun day of golf, camaraderie and the
satisfaction of knowing you are making a difference in the lives of women.
Saturday June 21 at Trilogy Golf Club at Redmond Ridge.
8 am shotgun start, scramble format. The $130 fee includes golf with cart,
continental breakfast, buffet lunch and awards and prizes.
Register online by June 6.
